Why am I human-centred designer?
Hello, this is Carol! Nice to see you on this page! I am a badass researcher, singer and dancer, passionate about human-centred design who shines brightest when presenting ideas in 5 languages (Cantonese, Chinese, English, French and Korean).
Growing up in Hong Kong, empathy was an alien concept that I was rarely exposed to, until I immigrated to Canada. Ever since then, the principles and the power of empathy have always guided me as a human and a designer. As I have been told that true empathy is the relentless attempt to try and put yourself into others' shoes, I find myself being a better friend. Likewise, as a designer, clients are more receptive to my ideas when I present them in the clients' contexts, team members are willing to work with me when I try to understand everyone's perspectives. The concept of empathy might be relatively new to cities like Hong Kong, but I trust that anyone can empathize with one another no matter which culture one might associate with.
Empathy, a skillset that enables me to become a human-centred designer, as well as a human-centred human.
Why do I structure my portfolio this way?
What you might come to notice is that each webpage of my work has been structured to answer three questions: 'Why? How? What?' Before I explain, I will first provide you the 'long-form' of these questions:
Why this piece of work was created?
How this piece of work was created?
What was the final product of this piece work?
I wish to appeal to you with why you should care most about my work. I am here to cater to your needs, human-centred, you-centred design.
By the way, I'd love to learn from my experience and hear any constructive criticisms! If you spot any false assumptions or points worthy of dispute, please let me know, I am happy to start an intelligent conversation
